VIRUDHUNAGAR: Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service personnel rescued an anteater, an endangered species, in a residential area here on Friday night.
Divisional Fire Officer, A. Karunakaran, said a resident of Vivekananda Street in Pandiyan Nagar found the anteater on the premises of his residence at around 9.45 p.m. The fire and rescue service commandos took away with them the animal, which is suspected to have strayed into the residential area along with a truck load of sand dumped there. It was handed over to forest officials on Saturday. “It is an endangered species. It has been listed in Schedule I of Wildlife Protection Act, along with tigers,” Range Officer, Srivilliputtur, A. Palaniraj, said. The harmless animal was being poached for its medicinal values and smuggled to foreign countries, Mr. Palaniraj said.
