Now, schools will give domicile certificates

MUMBAI: Parents and students will no longer have to make endless trips to the tehsil office for various certificates. This academic year onwards, the state revenue department will make available all the requisite certificates to Std IX students in the school itself. The project will begin in government-run schools and will eventually be extended to private schools as well, said Swadhin Kshatriya, principal secretary, revenue.
Certificates such as domicile, income, caste etc are necessary to avail of reserved seats, scholarships etc when children seek admission for higher education. The competition for seats in colleges and for professional courses makes it necessary for parents to keep these documents well in advance.
Often students start applying for these certificates after the SSC examinations. While there is a time frame mandated by the government for certificates to be provided once an application is made, often palms need to be greased before students can get these certificates. Jayant Jain, convener, Forum for Fairness in Education, said the state's move was a good one. "Often parents do not know where to get the domicile certificate from. Parents and students have to unnecessarily go to court. It will prevent frauds as teachers and principals know their students,'' he said.
Jain, however, cautioned that often students whose parents fight against injustice in school are victimized, especially in private schools. "Even today such students are not given their hall tickets in time or are forced to pay for it. The government should ensure that the certificates are given in time and if it is not done then the school is levied a fine."
