Committee of police, citizens to save mangroves in Oshiwara

A core committee of the police and the Oshiwara-Lokhandwala residents will be formed to monitor and work towards saving the mangroves in the suburban belt.

This move to form the committee is the result of a sudden fire that broke out recently at Lokhandwala complex. near Millat Nagar.were burnt down recently.

The burning of mangroves have become an everyday occurrence in Lokhandwala and residents suspect the builders' lobby. . is eyeing the green belt.

On June 5, the Oshiwara Lokhandwala Citizens' Association called senior policemen to brief them on the apathy of the authorities to protect the environment of the area, especially the mangroves.

Vishwas Nagre Patil (additional commissioner of police) Zone IX, assistant commissioner of police from Santacruz and DN Nagar division and all the senior PIs of various police stations were present.

An audio-visual presentation of nearly 15 minutes was prepared by OLCA and was presented by filmmaker and social activist Ashoke Pandit, chairperson, OLCA.

Vishwas Nagre-Patil, additional commissioner of police, zone IX, was taken along with other police officers to the terrace of one of the buildings and shown how the mangroves were destroyed and how residents were trying to save the rest.

"Citizens showed me a Power Point presentation on how mangroves were set on fire. they said, "Citizens apprised me of a HC order. We will verify and see if the police can take suo motu action against builders." . There are cases under the Environment Act registered against certain builders in the area and we will check and see if these cases are pursued"
