Gadgil, who was in Mumbai to deliver a lecture at the observer Research Foundation (ORF),said that it is sad that the government ignores and suppresses good information and that information should be available to all.He reiterated the need to classify Western Ghats as an eco-sensitive zone and on the need to involve local committees to formulate and implement bio-diversity and environmental guidelines.
Gadgil was approached by the MoEF in 2010 to head an expert committee to study the Ghats and make recommendations on how to harmonize the needs of development with environmental equilibrium. The report was made public by a reticent government only after activists pressured it.The recommendations from the report are still to be implemented and it is being reviewed by another committee set up the MoEF.Gadgil said the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) proposed the Ghats be considered eco-sensitive.
