MUMBAI: To extort Rs 14 crore, a little-known gangster's henchman attacked red sanders smuggling kingpin Ajit Satam in a government hospital in Nashik two weeks ago.
A Directorate of Revenue Intelligence estimate shows that Satam is worth Rs 500 crore. In April, he was detained for a year under the anti-smuggling law, and sent to Nashik prison but officials said he spent most of his detention period in hospital on grounds of ill-health.
It was in the hospital that a member of Kumar Pillai's gang demanded Rs 14 crore from Satam and when he effused, attacked him on the head and chin, injuring him severely, said the police. The attacker has been serving a sentence in a robbery case. But Satam neither lodged a complaint nor paid the amount, a source said. Kumar Pillai, believed to be holed up in Singapore, used to be an aide of fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan. Subsequently, he split and formed his own gang, which is mostly involved in extorting money from builders. in the eastern suburbs.
A few days after the attack, Satam again received a call on his mobile when the caller reiterated the demand for money and threatened that such attacks would continue if he refused to pay, said the police. It was not clear how Satam had access to a mobile. though there have been several instances where gangsters had made calls from jails.

Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) impounded 13 containers carrying 200 tonnes of red sanders worth Rs 50 crore from JNPT and arrested four of Satams associateshis partner Deepak Zare,operations manager Prakash Sivale and Bhaskar Tate,who fixed fake government seals on the containers and dye maker Jayesh Panchal.
Export of red sanders is banned.It is in demand in China where one gram of Pterosibilin,an extract of red sanders,costs $ 25 and is used to prepare an alternative for Viagra.
Satam and Zare were rivals till February but joined hands.For every container exported,Satam made a profit of Rs 2 crore while Zare earned Rs 1.5 crore.DRI found Rs 2.5 crore cash at Zares flat in Shailesh Towers in Nerul (E) and seized two Volkswagen Passats.Both are ex-Custom House Agents and had been arrested for smuggling in the past,officials said.
Satam had a 15-member operations team.Each member had four cellphones and changed their numbers every week.Pretending to be in Dubai,Satam placed orders online with plastic or mango pulp manufacturers who supplied in good faith.The containers are sealed by Central Excise officials on the companys premises,saying they contained declared goods, said the official.
On the way to the port,Satams group would replace the containers contents with red sanders at a godown.Red sanders were brought from Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border.A fake seal made in a small room at Vashi was then fixed on the containers, the official said.Satams Kolhapur godown is managed by his aide Ravindra Waikar,who is on the run.
Payment for red sanders is sent through hawala channels.The Dubai-based buyers sent red sanders to China, an official said.Satam had exported 43 such containers in the past.All have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
