Cute birds, bright fishes liven up this market

HUBLI: If chirping love birds and colourful fishes catch your imagination and if you want to brighten your home with a few of them, then head towards Ganeshpeth in Hubli. You will find some shops at the corner of the road, which sell rare species of graceful fishes and love birds.

There are fishes from Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore being sold at these places. While keeping an aquarium is an enjoyable hobby for many, some would like to keep fish at home as they believe that fish would bring them good luck. Bright aquariums adorn houses, hotels, hospitals and other establishments.

Speaking to TOI, Chandru, owner of Anand Fish Fare, said that there are different kinds of Vaastu fish -- red and black golden fish priced between Rs 40 to Rs 1,000 and the expensive Arowana fish priced between Rs 1,500 and Rs 1 lakh. There are other varieties of colourful fishes like Silver, Golden, Chilli Red, Green, Golden Pearl, Golden Crossback and Banjara Red and Flower Horne.

Apart from fishes, what draw people to these markets are the love birds. On an average, 250 pairs of love birds of different varieties are being sold in a month. There are three shops in Ganeshpeth here, which exclusively sell the cute little birds -- African love birds (aka peach faced birds) which cost 1,500 a pair; King Bujjery (aka Australian love birds) costing Rs 500 a pair; and ordinary love birds costing Rs 300 a pair. Another bird seller Jagadish Makandar said they get love birds from Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. "We get customers from Belgaum, Bagalkot, Gadag and other places apart from Hubli-Dharwad," he added. Businessman Mohammed Rafi, who visited the shop with his children looking for new varieties of the winged pets said that already he has a variety of fish in his house and wanted to add more to the aquarium.
