Soon, a bird sanctuary to come up at Tolankere Lake

HUBLI: Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) hopes to have its first bird sanctuary by March 2013.

Tolankere Lake is going to be developed as the second biggest lake of Hubli city. "The development plans were chalked out by Dharwad former DC Darpan Jain. As per his planning the development of the lake has almost been completed," said Y S Patil, HDMC commissioner.

The corporation has got in principle approval from the state tourism department for further beautification, to install a musical fountain, a bird sanctuary and other works, all for Rs one crore.

The Tolankere Lake, situated between Gokul road and Vidyanagar on 30 acres, used to have migratory birds. Now, due to lack of facilities and poor maintenance very few birds come to the lake. Development work of the lake is under progress and HDMC is spending Rs 3.45 crore from MLA funds and Rs.100 crore grant from the government.

Soon after the tourism department sanctions the fund, work on the bird sanctuary will be taken up. To attract birds, an island will be created, Hubli Dharwad Urban Development Authority will join hands with HDMC to develop the lake.

An amusement park for children with boating is part of the plan, said Mahesh Burli, corporator, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation.
