Work on Indian gaur breeding centre begins

MYSORE: Work on India's first Indian gaur breeding and research centre at Koorgalli began on Wednesday.

Zoo Authority of Karnataka chairperson M Nanjundaswamy laid the foundation stone for the fencing works. The centre at Koorgalli, 12km from the city, is being set up in association with Central Zoo authority (CZA). The forest department recently handed over 113.21 acres of land to Mysore zoo to set up the centre, a project of CZA.

According to the plan, of the 113.21 acres of land, 35.5 acres land will be reserved for gaur breeding, 24.18 acres for other species, 20.10 acre for animal rescue and conservation centre, 11.17 acre for an isolated zone and 16.11 acre for administrative office. A few years ago, the Indian gaur vanished from the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary due to a unique disease.

Keeping this in mind, a decision was taken to set up this centre to conserve them. Along with gaurs, 73 other similar species will also conserved in the centre.

Indian gaurs are found in plenty in Northeast states, Western and Eastern Ghats. Around 100 Indian gaurs each will be brought from the three regions and allowed to breed in the centre, said Mysore Zoo executive director B P Ravi.

Wild dogs, hyena, fox, endangered lion-tailed macaque from Chennai will also be brought to the centre.

Rs 18 crore project

The Mysore Zoo is yet to receive sufficient funds from the Centre and state governments for the Rs 18-crore project. The zoo alone has contributed Rs 1 crore to build a wall across centre.

"We are waiting for more funds from Centre and state governments," Ravi said.

The man-animal conflict in and around Mysore has turned into a challenge for forest officials.

Currently, all the rescued animals, including tigers, are shifted to Mysore Zoo for treatment and this was affecting the animals in captivity. In order to avoid this and to provide complete care for rescued animals, a rescue centre will be set up on 20.10 acre of land. The centre will have a full-fledged veterinary hospital and will come up adjacent to the research centre.
