Peacock scare on Shencottah train

MADURAI: A peacock that entered the engine driver's cabin of theShencottah Passenger travelling to Shencottah from Madurai near Thiruthangal in Virudhunagar district injured the assistant driver and forced the trip to be delayed by more than an hour and half on Wednesday evening.

The passenger left Madurai at 5.15pm and was near Thiruthangal in Virudhunagar district, when a peacock ran across the train. Since the train was travelling at about 80kms per hour the driver could not break. The bird panicked and flew into the engine drivers' cabin.

The large bird started fluttering its wings and feet and in the process injured assistant engine driver Alaguraja, 35, and broke the windscreen of the cabin. Engine driver Ismail, however, escaped unhurt and took the train to Sivakasi. The body of the peacock, which was dead by then, was handed over to the officials. Since medical officers were unavailable at Sivakasi, Srivilliputtur and Rajapalayam stations, Ismail stopped the train at Rajapalayam as the town is close to the station. Alaguraja, who was bleeding profusely, was treated at a private hospital in Rajapalayam. The train left for Shencottah after a delay of an hour and 10 minutes.

Railway sources said a lot of peacocks and even wild animals cross the track on the Shencottah-Madurai route, but it was the first time that a bird entered the cabin and injured a driver in the recent times.
