Jumbo herd enters steel city

ROURKELA: A herd of 12 elephants strayed into the city on Saturday night and damaged house of one Vishal Bhumij, some household articles and vegetable field of one Chandra Kharia before retreating into the forest. Bhumij's wife Rita, who was sleeping alone in the house, had a narrow escape as she ran outside hearing the trumpet of elephants.

About a month ago, another herd entered the city by crossing Koel river and stayed put near Sector 16 slum area for quite some time. The herd, however, did not damage any property.

According to forest officials, the elephant herd entered the city at about 12.30 am and marched towards Tumkela area. A team of forest officials, including range officer P K Dhal reached Tumkela and discussed with the residents. Dhal told the Bhumij family to complete formalities for getting compensation for house damage. "We have engaged a team of forest officials to keep track of the elephant herd," said Dhal.
