NASHIK: A review of the plantations carried out under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme Act (MGNREGS) has revealed that out of the total 11.86 lakh saplings planted during the last monsoon, only 56.70 per cent have survived.

"Out of the 11.86 lakh saplings planted by the zilla paishad, only 56.70 per cent have survived so far," the report by the MGNREGS said.

According to officials from the ZP who monitored the plantations carried out through its agencies, 11.86 lakh saplings were planted, thus achieving the 79 per cent of the target of 15 lakh saplings. The agency had dug up 15.02 lakh pits and had 2.36 crore saplings ready for plantation during the campaign, but could plant only around 12 lakh saplings.

According to officials, the rate of survival of the saplings planted, which was to be carried out by counting of the surviving plantations in October, was delayed and the report was generated only by mid-January. The report stated that only 6.72 lakh saplings survived, with Chandwad taluka reporting 100 per cent survival rate while Yeola and Malegaon reporting a survival rate of only 23 per cent.

"The rate of survival is much below the permitted range of 80 per cent. There are various reasons for this low rate - shortfall of rains, water scarcity, rigid and arid climatic conditions, etc. However, the statistics will be taken into consideration and reports will be called and analysed for better understanding of situation," a senior official from the forest department said.

It may be noted that the official from the forest department is the member secretary of the plantation committee, who does not have the information about the survival rates of all the plantations carried out under the project. All that the forest department was able to tell ival rate of plantations carried out by its department was 96 per cent.
