9 checkpoints to stop hunting on Sendra day

JAMSHEDPUR: After being successful in making two warring tribal factions agree to observe 'Bishu Parva' popularly known as 'Sendra' on the same day, the forest department is focused on deploying adequate security arrangements to ensure bloodless conduct of the annual ritual on May 6.
The forest department has planned to put up temporary checkpoints at nine places in the East Singhbhum and adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district apparently to prevent ritual enthusiast hunters from venturing into the 98 sq km Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary with lethal weapons.

The divisional forest officer of Dalma (wildlife) has written to the East Singhbhum district administration seeking cooperation for deploying adequate security by barricading nine entry points to the Dalma forest area.

The nine locations identified for check-points are Devgarh, Dhalbhumgarh, Pipla, Patamda, Paridih Kali Mandir and two places each in Bhadudih and Bahragora.

The DFO, in a letter to Akhilesh Jha, SSP, East Singhbhum, has sought adequate police deployment at all the checkpoints.

Besides, deployment of magistrates has also been sought to ensure effective implementation of the preventive measures.

"We are also conducting awareness campaign in villages surrounding Dalma sanctuary to enlighten the tribals on ways to observe the festival peacefully," said a forest ranger of the district.

Given that scores of festival enthusiasts come from neighbouring Bengal and Odisha, the administration is planning to check the crowd carrying weapons at the check-points itself.

The festival organizers said they will observe the festival in the traditional manner regardless of the arrangements of the forest department. "Since ages Bishu Parva is observed in a true traditional manner and we will continue to observe the festival in the same manner this year too," said Dalma Buru Sendra Disuwa convener Fakir Chandra Soren.

The outfit, however, is unwilling to say anything about the use of weapons for the hunting of wild animals on the festival day.

Hunting of animals has been banned in the sanctuary area. Despite this, tribals go inside the jungles in search of animals around this time every year and kill birds, wild pigs and barking deers, among other animals, on Sendra day escaping security personnel.
