AHMEDABAD: Over 220 kilogram of calcium carbide was destroyed by the Ahmedabad municipal corporation. The calcium carbide is used to ripen mangoes.
In the last few days, the food and drug administration has destroyed nearly 220 kg of toxic calcium carbide that is used by unscrupulous fruit vendors to ripen mangoes artificially in many fruit markets of the city.
Officials of the department also destroyed 30 tonnes of mangoes contaminated by the toxic chemical. Not only this, the department also noticed a rise in adulteration of edible oil. Food and drug commissioner HG Koshia told TOI.
"Last fortnight, we collected 187 samples from various towns and cities in Gujarat and in nearly 38 samples, edible oil like groundnut and cottonseed oil was found contaminated. Traders had adulterated the oil with highly refined palm oil."
AMC had earlier warned of strict action, including prosecution, if calcium carbide was used by traders to ripen mangoes.
