4-foot turtle found from Tapi shores

SURAT: A four-foot fresh water turtle, weighing 25 kg, was rescued from the mud of a causeway on Rander side of Tapi river here on Wednesday night. The 50-year-old Gangetic soft shell turtle (Trienix Gangeticus) was rescued by wildlife volunteers and locals. This species is found in the deep waters of Narmada and even Tapi river. It has never been seen in the shallow waters in the past eight years.

"We received a call some days ago about this schedule-1 endangered species. However, it would have been difficult to rescue it alive then because it was stuck deep in the mud," said Darshan Desai of city-based NGO Prayas.

"We went again on Wednesday evening and found that it had changed its position which was favourable to us to launch the rescue operation. The turtle has suffered some injuries and is under treatment at Prayas Rehabilitation Centre. It would be released in deep river after it recovers," he said.
