6.5 tonnes of red sanders logs seized 55km from Chennai
CHENNAI: The Tiruvallur police on Thursday confiscated a lorry and seized 6.5 tonnes of red sanders being smuggled from Andhra Pradesh during a vehicle check near Gummidipoondi on the Grand North Trunk (GNT) Road.
Lorry driver Jagadeesan, 23, and cleaner Barath, 21, of Red Hills were arrested.
Acting on a tip, police teams were checking vehicles coming from Andhra Pradesh when they stopped the lorry. They removed a tarpaulin sheet spread on the roof of the lorry and found red sanders logs concealed under bales of rice straw.
The driver and cleaner told investigators that the goods were sent from Kajampet in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh.
The smugglers had asked Jagadeesan to park the vehicle on the road side near Red Hills. The driver and the cleaner were not aware of the destination and the smugglers behind the racket. A case has been registered.
