A tale of two ‘love birds’

INDORE: This is a pair of birds that has become cynosure of all eyes at Navratan Bagh in Residency area of the city. An Indian Grey Hornbill pair, that has taken shelter in one of the trees in the locality, has become an epitome of love, trust and commitment attracting residents. Their behavioural pattern, which may be common among the species but rare among birds, has been fascinating people.

It is their nesting behaviour that has made their love story special.

The birds are being closely scrutinized and their behaviour and movements closely recorded 24x7 using a close circuit camera.

It has been observed that the female bird is inside the nest for nearly 30-40 days ever since it laid eggs. It is expected to stay there for another 30-40 days. In the meantime, the male hornbill has been feeding his partner and the newly-hatched chicks almost 12 to 15 times a day, mainly in morning hours. The male bird, in fact, foxes viewers and pretends as if thereis no nest whenever any danger lurks.

Amrita Shrivastav, a resident of Residency area, says, "At a time when our family bonds are weakening, we can learn few lessons from these birds. I have heard the story of "tota-maina" but I am witnessing it now."

Similarly, Varun Shukla, all gung-ho over the birds, says, "Their behavior is touching. It reminds us of our family tradition. Young generation should learn commitment, devotion and love from this pair of birds."

Chief conservator of forest P C Dubey says their love and commitment for the family is commendable and inspirational too.
