All Madurai corporation schools to go solar



MADURAI: Schools run by the Madurai corporation, henceforth, need not fully rely on the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) for power supply, as the civic body authorities have decided to generate electricity needed for the schools from solar energy.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state, the corporation authorities have installed solar power panels with the capacity of producing one KW power. In the first phase, four higher secondary schools have been covered. It has been decided to extend it to all the schools under the corporation limits in the near future.

R Nanthagopal, commissioner, Madurai corporation said that authorities have planned to install the solar panels in all the 11 higher secondary schools coming under the corporation limits. "In the initial phase, we have installed them in four corporation higher secondary schools on a pilot basis. In the long-run, we have plans to extend the facility to high, middle and primary schools," he said.

"Madurai corporation is the first among all the corporations in the state to take the initiative, to tap solar energy. We have been taking several efforts in the corporation schools to improve the quality of education. As a result, we have topped all the corporations in terms of overall pass percentage in the recently released plus two results," he said. The proposal to install the solar panels was decided by both the mayor and the corporation commissioner during a recent meeting.
