Forest dept's afforestation programme irks locals

PANAJI: The forest department's move to clear bushes for the purpose of afforestation has disappointed Kankonjangalbachaosamiti (KJBS), as it feared destruction of biodiversity in forest areas and fuel for locals.
The KJBS has protested the so-called afforestation of the forest department, stating that the cover of bushes harbours diversity and medicinal plants used by local communities for their sustenance.
"While bushes and other trees are considered unwanted by the forest dpeartment, they are the life-support of micro-biodiversity and are also very important as fuel for local residents," KJBS pointed out in a memorandum to the forest department and local MLA and sports minister, Ramesh Tawadkar.
The samiti alleged that clearing bushes will lead to degradation of the habitat of various creatures. "It further disturbs the food chain of dependant animals, focring them either to migrate or die of starvation," the memorandum stated.
The forest areas have medicinal plants and the samiti called for a sustainable use of the forest resources. The department had in fact mooted propagation of medicinal plants in forest areas.
