Green bench directs effective measures for pollution control

JAIPUR: A green bench of the high court has asked the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RPCB) to see that environment degradation does not take place. The court has also asked RPCB to implement a uniform pattern for better environment on the basis of measures proposed to be adopted in Ajmer district for which a detailed report was tabled before the bench on Wednesday.

The bench also disapproved of the disrespectful attitude of M L Meena, additional principal chief conservator of forests, Rajasthan in challenging the observations made by the bench. The green bench comprising of Justice M N Bhandari and Justice Bela M Trivedi while hearing the progress report filed by the forest department with regard to afforestation in the state made certain categorical remarks which were termed by Meena as "wild and sweeping remarks". Dissatisfied with the manner in which the replies to the question raised by bench were answered the bench directed that principal secretary forest, Rajasthan should remain present in person on May 21.

The order was passed on a suo moto petition dealing with the encroachments in Ramgharh dam and other water bodies of the state wherein the bench amongst several directions has asked the state to restore the water bodies to their original format as existing prior to 1947. The bench has also asked all the collectors to remove all encroachments from water bodies or the catchment areas including those which have been re-erected after demolition. The irrigation department has been asked to make trenches joining various local water sources so as to facilitate the water drainage. It has been directed that the work of laying down trenches should be completed before onset of monsoon.
