Green energy: MP to outdo other states

BHOPAL: Striving for a place under the sun - Madhya Pradesh could outdo other states in renewable energy sector, government officials claimed on Thursday. The state hopes to increase renewal energy production from current levels of 499 MW to 3.3 GW by June 2015.

Addressing a conference on 'investment opportunities in solar, wind and biomass' department of new and renewable energy principal secretary S R Mohanty said Asia's biggest 150 MW solar project in Neemuch district would be a game changer in renewable energy sector in the state. The project will be commissioned in June this year.

"After China and the US, it would be world's third biggest solar project. We hope it would touch an aggregate 200 MW capacity," Mohanty said.

He also said talks were on with the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC) to fund improving power grid in the state. "We are also looking at tapping the Rs 45,000 crore grid improvement of the Union government," he added.

The state government is targeting to increase wind projects capacity to 600 MW by April 2014, 300 MW through smaller mini units by 2015 and targets 80 MW power generation through biomass this year.

In the ASSOCHAM conference, industry representatives highlighted that except on two occasions 'billing permission' has not been given since July 2012 and those without renewable energy certificates stand to lose out on option of retrospective billing. "Implementation and purchase of REC still has investors worried," said an investor seeking anonymity." Madhya Pradesh Solar Policy 2012 is fine, but the implementation by state electricity board is poor. The bureaucratic mindset has yet to change," he added.
