Jumbo killed, tusks taken
KEONJHAR: Forest officials on Tuesday seized carcass of a 22-year-old tusker from a demarcated reserve forest near Pachapani village, about 30 km from here, in the district.
According to sources, poachers had killed the tusker a week back and took out the tusks. After postmortem, the carcass was buried in the forest.
Earlier, the elephant had killed one person and injured two others in the last few months. Forest officials are investigating the incident by registering a case.
Assistant conservator of forests Soumyak Samantara said, "We have already got clue about the poachers. A manhunt has been launched to nab them."
After the incident, forest officials are worried about the security of another 30-year-old jumbo, having huge tusks, moving in the area.
"We are keeping a close watch on the tusker's movement and taking measures to protect it from the poachers," said Samantara.
