LUCKNOW: The Confederation of India Industries (CII), UP launched on Tuesday, the Smart Power for Environmentally-sound Economic Development (SPEED) in the state claiming that decentralised renewable energy plants can meet the demands of households, irrigation and micro enterprises in rural areas. solutions in meeting the growing requirements of power at remote locations, where more than 50% of the population has little or no commercial energy access for their living and livelihood. Therefore, the need of the hour is to promote aggressively renewable energy sources and technologies. In this regard, SPEED is a perfect example of what clean energy can make a difference to the lives and livelihoods of the rural community. I take this opportunity to appreciate and congratulate CII, the Rockefeller Foundation and all its national and international partners for launching this unique SPEED initiative."

Debashish Mazumdar, chairman CII UP state council and director development and financial services, Wartsila India Ltd. said: "SPEED has initiated its intervention in four sites across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Two plants are being developed by DESI power in the Araria Cluster at the sites Bara and Chakai. A 32KW biomass-based plant has been developed at Bara and is operational. Another biomass-based power plant of 32 Kw is under construction at Chakai. Third power plant is under construction by Gram Power in the Faizabad cluster, Uttar Pradesh at site Mubarakganj. It is an 11KW solar power plant. Fourth power plant will be under construction from this week by Applied Solar Technology in the Saran cluster, Bihar. It is a 30 Kw solar power plant at the site Diyara Rasoolpur. SPEED projects in Mubarakagnj and Diyara Rasoolpur are expected to start distribution of power by mid May, 2013."

Aiming to focus on biomass as source of electricity generation, the project is aimed at providing power to rural areas at local level.
