Wildlife boom in Hazaribag

HAZARIBAG: The population of spotted deer (cheetal) in the Hazaribag National Park has gone up to 75 from 35 a few years ago.

Divisional forest officer, wildlife, Hazaribag, R N Mishra said the growth in the animal population was possible after continuous vigil over their movement and taking care of their requirements like food and water.

Although some of the spotted deer sometimes sneaked into the thickly populated villages mainly for food and water, but this cannot be completely checked as these sensitive animals often run to their safety after being chased away by some other animals like bear which are now available in the forests.

"The population of cheetal has gone up to 75 as against 30 to 35 a few years ago mainly because of some facilities provided by the government to develop a sanctuary for deer, barking deer (cotra) and sambar," Mishra said.

Besides, the number of barking deer has gone up to 25 and sambar has gone up to 4 from two. Although tiger was visible in the forest about 35 to 45 years ago but they have disappeared now because of large-scale felling of trees for construction of roads and infiltration of human population including poachers.

"However, one encouraging news is that two panthers (commonly known as tendua in Hindi) is seen in the forest," the DFO said.

The growth of population of some birds like peacock (50) and vulture (210) is also encouraging. The DFO said the number of vulture in Hazaribag forests had registered appreciable growth. The park is located on the side of NH-33 (Patna-Ranchi Road), about 20 km from here.

particularly in other parts of Jharkhand and India the visibility of vulture was rare as due to some reasons the rare species of vulture were on the verge of extinction due to which the concerns were expressed by both the Bird environmentalist and the Government .But now the DFO R.N.Mishra said that by taking special measures for preserving the vulture which resulted into rise of population to 230 in Hazaribag forests was appreciated by the National Wild Life Board which have given letter of appreciation and certificate to Hazaribag recently.

When asked the reasons for growth in the population in Hazaribag"the DFO said we have created proper habitat for such animal by making availability of grass belt and drinking water through the check dams constructed inside the park. He said even water holes are filled up regularly in the forests for the animals so that they get drinking water readily. He said in the Koderma sanctuary which is having population of 18 spotted deer and 11 barking deer they are facing water problem for which they have constructed deep boring well for supplying water to the animals. In this part he sai due to water some times deer crosses highways for search of water and found crushed under the wheels of heavy vehicles .Besides he said that they have set up "Core Zone in the Reserve forests of Hazaribag and Koderma where entry of all type of people including tourists are prohibited mainly to give freedom to the movement of wild animals inside the forest under the guidance of the Wild Life board. In such areas only the departmental staff are allowed to enter.

Besides this he said in order to prevent entry of villagers living close to the forests"we have distributed 1300 solar lights in 14 villages at the rate of one light to one family. Besides preventing their entry for collection of fuel wood special ovens were distributed to such villagers which consumes less fuel.
