GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has raised concern over possible adverse impact of silt excavation from the Brahmaputra river bed to fill up low-lying areas in the Chandrapur revenue circle near the city, which is becoming a favoured location of real estate developers.

In an order issued on the ongoing construction and development activities in the Chandrapur area recently, Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri said if unscientific filling of low-lying areas and haphazard, unplanned and unscientific construction activity continue, it might affect the ecology of the river.

Agnihotri also observed that such unregulated development may cause irreversible damage to Chandrapur and its surrounding areas.

In a bid to expand Guwahati, a lot of construction is being done in areas like Chandrapur. However, the village panchayats concerned do not have the expertise to monitor the construction activities. Hence, the district administration has asked the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to come up with a scientific master plan to develop the Chandrapur area.

The deputy commissioner directed the GMDA to ensure the scientific master plan of the area with a proper drainage plan. The order also directed the CEO of Kamrup (Metro) zila parishad and officials of the village panchayats concerned not to issue no-objection certificates (NOC) for any kind of construction activity in the area without the scientific master plan and drainage plan being in place.

A senior revenue official of the district administration said, "Chandrapur is going to be one of the most favoured destinations of the real estate builders. Chandrapur can be developed into a planned urban locality to cater to the needs of the growing population of the city."

Along with Chandrapur, the district administration also cautioned officials of other revenue circles in the city to curb unscientific construction of buildings along the bank of the river.
