MYSORE: The foresters on Monday sighted the movement of a tiger within the vicinity of the site in Bandipur where a tribal was killed, indicating that the killer tiger has not left the forested area.

However, what has perplexed the officials is that the cameras placed in the vicinity have picked up two photographs of two tigers. They are not sure which one among them could have killed Javaraiah. They are tacking the movement of the tigers in the surrounding areas, which form the core area of the tiger sanctuary.

An official, who didn't wish to be named, said they are confused given that the cameras have picked up two photographs of tigers. Both of them are male and different.

Since it is a core area in the tiger reserve, unlike at Chikkabaragi where the tiger was roaming in the periphery, it has made our task difficult, he stated.

"We searched for the tiger and tracked its movement in the wild. We've noticed the movement of a tigress in the area. It has two cubs. We suspect that it could have attacked the tribal to protect its cubs, Conservator of Forests and director of Bandipur Tiger Reserve H C Kantharaju told TOI. He said the search operation will continue on Tuesday. There are no reports of cattle attack in the area, he stated.

The tigress is spotted near the cage which is placed at the site where the tribal is killed. The officials are now surmising that protective instincts led the tigress to attack the tribals and kill one of them. It looks like an accident, a senior official stated.

The forest officials have cut down the staff put on the mission to search for the killer tiger. This is to ensure that the tiger doesn't get distracted and shift its base, the senior official said, putting the number of ground staff involved in the operation at Maddur range at 20. Maddur range is in Gundlupet taluk in Chamarajnagar district and borders Kerala. Another batch of 30 ground staff are patrolling the area on the outer periphery of the tiger reserve. The team is assisted by five elephants led by the veteran in tiger operations, Abhimanyu. He joined the batch earlier in the day, which led the foresters to send back Jayaprakash to the Bandipur elephant camp.
