No underground drainage in 40 Karnataka towns'

BANGALORE: About 40 towns in the state don't have underground drainage and water supply in the state doesn't match national standards, PN Sreenivasachari, principal secretary of urban development department, said here on Friday.

Addressing members of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), he said the state does not meet criteria of Litres Per Capita Per Day (LPCD), that is water consumption per person per day set for each place.

As per LPCD, consumption of water per person per day in metros, towns and rural areas is 150 litres, 135 litres, and 70 litres respectively but Karnataka lags behind, Sreenivasachari added. The 40 towns that don't have underground drainage system also suffer from inadequate water supply. He said most of these are in North Karnataka, including Savanur in Haveri district, Siriguppa in Bellary and H D Kote in Mysore.

Around 38% of the state is urbanized, he said, and blamed the gap between investment and growth for the frenetic pace at which unplanned urbanization was going on.

Explaining why local bodies are lagging behind, he said works on 3,000 km of roads in towns of 19 districts are under way, but good quality works have to be monitored by local bodies. Pointing out that the revenue generated by local bodies is low, he said BBMP which proposes a Rs 8,000-crore budget outlay generates only Rs 5,000 crore as revenue, said Sreenivasachari. He said comparatively there is more transparency, accountability, commitment and citizen response in local bodies of China.

On Bangalore's traffic woes, he said urban mobility in the city is an issue as only 45% of the population uses public transport

Investors meet:

FKhas organized an investors' meet in Coimbatore on January 20. R Shivakumar, FKCCI president, told reporters that the objective of the meet is to attract Tamil Nadu investors to invest in bordering districts of Karnataka like Chamarajnagar. Chief minister Siddaramaiah has agreed to take part in it and a similar meet is planned in Andhra Pradesh, he said
