Tusker rescued from well

Keonjhar: A tusker was rescued from a deep well in Keonjhar's Parjanpur by forest and fire brigade officials on Friday morning.

The eight-year-old animal had fallen into the 30-ft deep well late on Thursday. A fire brigade team filled the well with water and broke its walls to help the animal come out of it in a two-hour exercise.

"There was around 20-ft water in the well. It was a challenge for us to rescue the elephant. We poured water into it from a nearby pond," said in-charge fire officer of Jhumpura B Nayak.

"We also broke the upper part of the wall with the help of a loader machine. Around 7 am, the elephant climbed up and ran into the forest," he added.

Villagers said 18 elephants entered the village from Parjanpur forest to eat crops.

They ate paddy kept in the courtyards of houses. While returning, the tusker fell into the well of Santosh Giri. "I informed the forest department when the tusker fell into the well," said Giri.

This is the second instance of an elephant being rescued from a well. A similar incident had taken place at Maidankela village under Sadar forest range last month.
