MEDAK: Farmer K Chandrasekhar Rao hopes to make more than Rs 10 crore per annum by growing and selling vegetables at his 60-acre farm in 2014. Stating that farming based on greenhouse technology is highly lucrative, the TRS president promised to bring about a new green revolution in Telangana once the new state is farmed.

In the farmhouse located across the Karimnagar highway in Erravalli village of Medak district, KCR grows potatoes, coloured capsicum, bitter gourd and bottle gourd. "I grow coloured capsicum on 10 acres and potatoes on 45 acres and hope to fetch a revenue of Rs 10 crore annually. The produce is highly remunerative as it is done under proper consultancy and with use of technology," KCR told a group of media persons he took to his farmhouse on Thursday. Farm income is tax free.

The media tour was in response to charges from the TDP and other parties that the TRS chief 's farmhouse was his luxurious retreat where he spends most of his time. "The farmhouse is a product of labour. I developed it three years ago. Thirty acres are in my name and the remaining in my son K Tarakarama Rao's name. I was able to raise the farm only with the help of a loan of Rs 45 lakh from the Bank of Baroda," KCR claimed.

According to the TRS chief, he grew potato, bitter gourd, and bottle gourd and in the first year itself repaid the entire loan after getting a return of Rs 1.5 crore. "Now, I am growing coloured (green and red) capsicum on 10 acres using greenhouse technology. The capsicum crop is being grown in 14 greenhouse tents," he said.

Referring to the greenhouse technology, KCR said he raised a fresh loan of Rs 3 crore to implement the new technology and purchase of equipment. The automatic crop management and water management technology involves a computerized system that has a jet sprinkling system that he purchased from an Italian firm.

TRS chief swears by rainwater harvesting

"It controls the drip irrigation while supplying water mixed with fertilizer and nutrition to the crop, depending on the age of the plant. Because of the advanced drip irrigation technology, the amount of water being used for one acre in the conventional way caters to six acres in my farmhouse," the TRS chief said.

Apart from the adoption of cutting-edge technology, KCR has used rainwater harvesting in a big way. "I have dug a huge rainwater harvesting pit that stores about 200 crore litres of water. As the region received good rains this year, the rainwater harvesting pit is full because of which the borewells in the surrounding area have been recharged, making the farmers happy," he said. "People have already come forward to buy capsicum at Rs 150 per kg. I expect to make Rs 8 crore by selling capsicum," he said.

KCR proposed that Rs 1,000 crore should be earmarked to encourage farmers to use greenhouse technology.

"About 20 villages in each of 10 T districts would be selected for implementing the technology. Maharashtra and Bihar are providing 75% subsidy to farmers for greenhouse cultivation, while in AP it is zero. Telangana will subsidize greenhouse farming," he said.
