Safe centres for animals in districts
RELATED
AHMEDABAD:
The forest department will set up rescue and treatment centres in each
district of the state, looking at the pattern of conflict between man
and animal. For example, a rescue centre for crocodiles and monkey will
be set up in Vadodara, while Gandhinagar need a snake and monkey rescue
centre.
The decision to set up rescue centres was taken during the meeting of senior state forest department officials and officials from the ministry of environment and forests (MOEF).
Officials said that in South Gujarat, there is a need for leopard rescue centres as incidents of conflict are more in the southern and northern parts of the state. C N Pandey said that the meeting, held in Sasan in the presence of senior MOEF officials also decided to replicate the Gujarat model in other states. The officials were of the opinion that a subsidy for fencing fields was a good move.
C N Pandey said that during the meeting it was decided that to reduce the menace of neelgai and wild boar, vegetation which keeps these animals away be planted along boundaries of fields so do not destroy the fields.
Pandey said that the forest department has also decided to hand over a study to Gujarat Agriculture University to find vegetations to keep animals away. Also, it was decided that with various NGOs, a campaign "living with the Panther," will be taken up in areas which has a high density of leopards. Pandey said the booklet is ready and a campaign will be taken up.
In all, nine species were identified which were subject to man-animal conflict. These included panther, crocodile, sloth bear, lion, neelgai, wild boar among others. Some officials from other states also decided to replicate the project where sarpanches are given the power to shoot neelgai if they causing a disturbance in the area.
