NASHIK: Magsayay awardee
and "India's waterman" Rajendra Singh will accompany social activists
on January 12 for the circumambulation of the Godavari from its point of
emergence at Brahmagiri in Trimbakeshwar up to its end in Rajmundri,
Andhra Pradesh.
The purpose to conduct this activity is to study the river and its banks thoroughly and how find solutions on how it can be rejuvenated. It is also being conducted to create awareness amongst the youth about the river and its present state.
The circumambulation will begin at 3 pm on January 12 and conclude on January 15 at Rajmundri. Singh will accompany the social activists and on January 14 he will be addressing students at Raosaheb Thorat Hall, elected representatives and politicians at Kalidas Kala Mandir at the insistence of the mayor and to general public at Yashwant Patangan on the banks of the river.
"We are claiming that this is the first kind of circumambulation along a river right from its point of origin till its end. Godavari river is the identity of Nashik and its condition is very serious. Apart from sewage and industrial effluents, it is very essential to create awareness campaign amongst the public, by and large. We will start from Brahmagiri on January 12 and will pass through Nashik on January 14," said an activist.
The activists have been fighting for keeping the river clean for a long while and believe that this activity would help find the problem areas and solutions to bring back the river to its normal state.
