MUMBAI: Action has been recommended against several developers by the
state environment appraisal committee (SEAC-2) for undertaking
construction without prior environment clearance (EC).
Ravi Budhiraja, chairperson of SEAC-2, which scrutinizes construction proposals for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, said there were nearly100 cases over the last year.
Along with various developers, the State Bank of India, the state police housing corporation and Reliance's Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City have been found to have carried out constructions in violation of the Environment Protection Act. Reliance sources said they had permissions from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation to carry out the construction. "MIDC issued the commencement certificate and never asked for environment clearance," they said.
SBI did not respond to queries seeking comment.
