Elephants chase forest officials, villagers in Krishnagiri district

KRISHNAGIRI: A herd of 50 elephants that entered agricultural fields in Pillaikothur village, near Hosur, in Krishnagiri district chased forest officials and villagers when they tried to drive the jumbos away on Friday.

"The pachyderms reached the village from Melumalai reserve forest area which is near to the Karnataka reserve forests," a forest official said.

The elephants reached the agricultural fields near Pillaikothur on Thursday night. The herd entered a lake near the village at around 9am on Friday and remained there till 1.15pm. The villagers' attempt to drive the herd away went futile.

"Forest officials rushed to Pillaikothur village when the villagers alerted them. When officials started chasing the elephants, they started running towards human habitation, instead of going to the forest area," the official said.

Meanwhile, villagers demanded that the state government take permanent measures to prevent elephants from entering human habitations. They wanted the authorities to assess the extent of crop loss and provide them adequate compensation.
