Forest department sets world record in tree plantation

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh forest department has made it to Guinness Book of World Record for planting 17 lakh saplings in 10 hours flat.

The saplings were planted in 38,523 locations spread over three districts of Shahdol, Umaria and Anupur simultaneously on July 22 last year. A certificate was issued by Guinness World Record (GWR) Office, United Kingdom in recognition of the feat.

The brain behind the initiative and then chief forest conservator of Shahdol forest circle Y Satyam said, "The record has been made in multiple locations category."

It was purely a public participatory drive and saplings were planted at private land without any funding from the government. People were motivated under 'save forest campaign' for around 11 months before the D Day, he said.

The idea was to reduce pressure on forest produce and make environment greener, Satyam told TOI. A total of 86,823 people participated in the drive, the senior officer said.

"Actually 55 lakh saplings were planted on July 22. But as per the GWR guidelines, two government servants are required to remain present to verify and certify plantings at each location," Satyam said.

For 38,523 locations, around 77,046 government servants were required as witnesses as per the GWR guidelines and since the number of government servants were not available, only 17 lakh made it to the book of record, he said.

"We selected 2,829 locations as witness locations, because we had only 5,658 officials, other sites were not considered as witness locations," Satyam said.
