Lake conservationist Venkata Subba Rao (78), who fought for 20 years to
save Byrasandra Lake near Jayanagar, has been awarded for his efforts.
He launched a campaign in 1992 when the lake bed was a dumping ground for waste and a prey to realtors. He took his battle from civil courts to the Supreme Court and eventually succeeded in rejuvenating the lake.
He was recognized as one of the heroes of Bangalore and presented with the Namma Bengaluru Awards 2013. Schoolteacher Nagamani received the award of government official of the year and BangaloreOne won in the government organization category.
