Villagers come out in poacher’s defence

BAREILLY: After a poacher was arrested from Amangarh forest reserve in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh, local villagers sat on a dharna outside the divisional forest office demanding his release. They said elephants destroy their crops on a regular basis and it is people like the arrested man who help them in keeping the pachyderm at bay.

Poacher Vanshi was arrested by the forest officials from compartment nine of Amangarh forest reserve on Saturday. A knife for skinning the animals and a steel wire used as a trap were recovered from his possession. However, two accomplices of Vanshi, who is a resident of Dhara village of Bijnor, managed to escape.

Soon after the arrest, the villagers, especially the local farmers came forward to rescue the poacher. "They believe that poachers can save them from the menace of elephants and other wild animals. But they do not realize that helping poachers is a crime," said a senior forest official.

Sub-divisional forest officer, Bijnor, Salil Shukla confirmed that villagers sat on a dharna outside his office.
