Kolis seek Rs 500 crore from ONGC for blasts that are killing fish

MUMBAI: The Koli fishermen of Dahanu, Palghar, Vasai and Mumbai are
demanding a compensation of Rs 500 crore from ONGC for reduced catch.
They have alleged that the High which is killing fish in a wide area.
The Kolis said these blasts were responsible for the deaths of 32 dolphins in the past five months. Necropsies on the bodies of these mammals that were washed ashore have been unable to identify the cause of the injuries. The Kolis have approached the CM and will write to the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
Damodar Tandel, chairman of the Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kruti Samiti, held a press meet on Monday. He presented a video of the deadly exploration which allegedly destroys marine life over an area of 1 lakh sq km.
Tandel said that since five months there is virtually no catch along Mumbai's coastline from Dahanu to Vasai, Versova, Madh and Cuffe Parade. "ONGC had said the blasts would be carried out for 15 days but has extended the activity to May already," he said.
An ONGC official said, "We have not seen their demands, so I can't comment. All I can say is that ONGC being a global exploration firm always maintains best practices both onshore and offshore. We do exploration in all parts of the world with internationally bench-marked practices."
