SURAT: Volunteers of Nature Club, Surat on Monday rescued a rare bird known as 'sooty tern' from Dumas.
The bird, according to the volunteers, has been spotted for the first time in Surat. The bird is usually found in Hawaii, Maldives, Tortugas in North America, New Zealand and Lakshadweep in India.
Nature Club volunteer Tejas Patel said, "We received a call from residents in Dumas about an unidentified bird in need of immediate medical assistance. We rushed to the spot and identified the bird as Sooty Tern. The bird is likely to have got injured in the last week's rains."
Patel said this bird species generally prefer tropical areas and follow warm-water currents. They avoid shallow waters and areas near mainland coast. They nest mostly on small islands, on open sandy beaches with sparse vegetation.
"We have kept the bird under constant observation and medical care. The bird is likely to recover soon from the injuries," said Patel.
