KOLHAPUR: The civic body has drafted the detailed project report (DPR) to restore the beauty and strength of the  at an estimated Rs 125 crore.

Once finalised, the project will be submitted to the Union government to seek funds. In 2008, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) had received Rs 8.66 crore to remove the water hyacinth and sediments and lay the drainage line along the lake. The pollution of the river, however, continued because of the delaye in the drainage pipeline work. As a result, there was no let-up in the release of the sewage water generated in the nearby areas into the lake. Besides, the structure of the lake has over the years become weak and there have been frequent incidents of wall collapses in the last two years.

"The major components of the DPR will be on installation of sewage treatment plants (STP) on the nullahs flowing along the lake site. We have completed the major work of drainage pipe carrying sewage from nearby Shyam Society and Deshmukh Hall nullahs. The sewage from other minor nullahs will be diverted by laying a network of drainage lines," said S K Kulkarni, the deputy hydraulic engineer of the KMC,

In 2009, the KMC, in association with the irrigation department, had removed 1.60 lakh cubic metre of the sediments, along with water hyacinth amounting 8,000 dumpers. The KMC claims that the funds have been utilised to divert the sewage released into the lake, construction of overflow channels, immersion kunds and protecting walls.

"The project will emphasise on the beautification of the lake by installing lights and fountains, among other things. We have already started the construction of the wall along the Shalini Palace area. This wall had frequently collapsed in the past. All minute details of the project will be studied before the report is submitted to the government," Kulkarni said.

The lake has undergone drastic changes over the years due to which its biology and quality of water has degraded severely.
