Want Aarey to build Metro shed: MMRDA tells national green tribunal

MUMBAI: The state government has once again backtracked on its promise not to build the Metro-3 shed at Aarey Colony.

In an affidavit filed before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Pune bench, on Monday, the MMRDA has stated, "Approval/leave be granted to carry out construction of a car depot facility as recommended by the technical committee's report dated May 2015 in Aarey Colony.'' The chief minister is the MMRDA chairperson and had assured that the depot will not come up in Aarey.

The MMRDA filed the affidavit as an intervenor in a plea filed by the 'Save Aarey' movement in August to declare the green patch as an eco-sensitive zone.

The MMRDA, which is executing the Metro-3 project, has sought approval from the NGT for the use of a minimum 20.82 hectares as against the proposed 30 hectares for construction of the car shed. It has also sought permission for cutting down 500 trees during the pendency of its intervention plea as recommended by the six-member committee in its May report.

It has further said that though the state government had accepted in-principle the committee's recommendation to construct the main car depot at Kanjurmarg, the land is, however, under litigation and its actual availability will be subject to the high court's orders. The authority said it has no alternative but to use the Aarey land.

"It is, therefore, just and necessary and in public interest to permit the Intervenor (MMRDA) to carry out the activity of construction of the car depot facility (part) in Aarey Colony and facilitate timely completion of the project under way with the assistance of foreign (Japan International Cooperation Agency) funds on interest,'' the affidavit" mentioned.

It has also pointed out that the committee has recommended that "in case Kanjurmarg is not available, then the modified layout of a full service double-deck depot should be considered at the present site (Aarey Colony)".

The MMRDA has said it would go by the technical committee's recommendation to plant three trees for every tree that is felled and maintain them for five years.

The Save Aarey movement members said they were disappointed by the affidavit filed by the MMRDA. "We feel cheated. There was no attempt made by the government to seriously consider other alternatives,'' said Anand Pendarkar, an Aarey conservation group member.
