Thiruvananthapuram model waste disposal

KOZHIKODE: Corporation authorities are considering a proposal to introduce coir-pith composting method that has been implemented successfully in the limits of Thiruvananthapuram corporation for the disposal of waste at the source points. A team lead by mayor V K C Mammed Koya visited the Thiruvanathapuram along with an official delegation last week for the inspection of working of the coir-pith composting model being executed there.

The move was part of the effective decentralized waste disposal mechanism planned for the Kozhikode corporation to put an end to the existing waste menace. Though the civic body had introduced decentralized waste disposal methods like pipe composts and bio gas plants during the previous council tenure, the project couldn't be executed fully owing to technical delay in
allottment of funds

According to the corporation office, at present, the civic body has been dumping solid waste ranging from 40 to 65 tonnes per day at the Njeliyanparamba trenching ground. The generated waste has been collected by more than three hundred Kudumbashree members engaged in door-to-door waste collection.

Corporation health officer M M Vijayan, said that a non-government organization has been running the coir-pith composting in the capital city. "Two bins will be placed at the houses. The bin will be filled with different lawyers of coir pith and biodegradable waste generated at the houses. Then inoculum will be sprinkled over the compost. The coir pith in the bins will be converted into manure through bacterial process within a month. The produced manure will be collected by the agency and they have also been collecting Rs 200 as service charge per month from house onwers for the work,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor said that the project is simple and is being effectively executed in Thiruvananthapuram. "Awareness programmes are required for the effective execution of the project in the corporation. The major attraction of the project in Thiruvananthapuram is that the NGO executing the coir-pith composting also collect plastic waste from the households. The project will be executed in the corporation limit considering its feasibility, 'he said.
