PUNE: The joint forest management committee for the Kas plateau is going to offer residential facilities that will have a rustic touch, for the tourist visiting this UNESCO
heritage site. The tourists will stay in small houses with the
villagers, will enjoy local food and also take them as guides for the
tour of the plateau.
The plateau is located 132 km south of Pune, and 24 km from Satara district. It is spread over 1,000 hectares and is famous as a valley of flowers and rich biodiversity.
The joint forest committee comprises foresh officials, district
administration representatives and residents from villages near the
plateau. The committee has issued a statement regarding the initiative
to provide facilities to the tourists visiting the plateau during
September to November, every year.

A meeting regarding conservation of the plateau was held, where state forest principal secretary Pravinsinh Pardeshi met the committee members and approved the committee's proposal of providing facilities to tourists.

The state forest department recently put some restrictions on tourists to preserve the natural heritage site. A six kilometre fencing was done on the plateau to avoid trampling of plants and flowers. The committee collects Rs 10 as entry fee per person and there are separate charges for vehicle owners and photography too. Many visitors demanded facilities from the committee in lieu of charges being taken from the tourists.

The season has just begun and tourists have started visiting the plateau on weekends. The villagers are ready to offer night accomodation if tourists demand, said the committee representatives.

The state forest department has already restricted the movement of tourists to 2,000 per day at the plateau. The decision was taken in August this year. The Kas plateau is home to several rare and endemic species of plants. Between 30,000 and 50,000 tourists visit the plateau on weekends during the peak season.

There were lot of cattle grazing in the
area and Akshara wanted to get close to each one of them. With the slope
on either side, it was difficult to catch up with her and the cows!
On our first trip, we were probably the
only ones on the plateau as it was a rainy day and the whole plateau was
covered in mist. We drove in the direction of Bamnoli, but after a
while, the visibility was just too less for me to keep on driving.
Akshara also got an opportunity to pose with a lamb, but she was all
enthu’d until the moment the lamb also got enthu’d and got too close for
her comfort.
On the trip during the monsoons, we took
the route from Satara to Mahabaleshwar through Medha village and
kanheri dam. This was one of the best routes i had driven on in terms of
the number and the size of the waterfalls seen. The advantage of this
route is that it goes through a valley and slowly climbs into
Mahabaleshwar and because of this you get to see all the waterfalls on
the both the cliffs to the side.
