Sand mining unabated in Kendrapada, Jajpur districts

KENDRAPADA: Sand mining continues in many parts of Kendrapada and Jajpur districts despite the August 14 National Green Tribunal order to curb such practices without proper environment clearance.

Illegal sand mining is going on near Bramahani, Baitarani, Kharosotra and Luna rivers with powerful local mafias allegedly involving agricultural labourers in the act. In riverside villages of Padmapur Daneipur under Rasulpur tehsil in Jajpur district and Rajkanika and Baspur in Kendrapada, the illegal mining has turned out to be a lucrative cottage industry.

Ananta Kumar Swain of Daneipur village said, "Illegal sand mining is being carried out at 10 places along Bramahani river at Daneipur and Padmapur in Jajpur district. But the officials have not been able to check such practices"

"Each day, tractors and trucks are allowed to enter village roads and extract sand. The village roads near many sand mining areas are in a bad condition because of plying of heavy vehicles," said Babaji Jena of Daneipur.

Tehsildar of Rasulpur Kantharam Majhi said, "Some persons are involved in illegal sand mining at Daneipur. We have stopped that. The authorities have directed all sand lifters to obtain environment clearance from the government."

"We received complaints from villagers about illegally lifting of sand from Kharosotra river near Gadagadia ghat at Rajkanika. I have directed the Rajkanika tehsildar to submit a report about on this," said sub-collector of Kendrapada Pratap Chandra Mishra said.
