Animal rights campaigner found dead
ROURKELA: A woman who campaigned against animal sacrifice was found dead near her home in Sundargarh district on Thursday night.
The body of Sumitra Behera, 42, was recovered from a field at Sarsara Balanga village, about 200 metres from her house. Sumitra's husband Malu said she might have been killed by some people, who regularly hold cockfights.
"My wife was an active campaigner against animal sacrifice and had always opposed cockfights. She had earlier received threats from several people. I suspect they might have murdered her," said Tikayatpalli police quoting Sumitra's husband. "The woman's head was found smashed," police said.
Sumitra had gone to the nearby ayurvedic clinic around 5 pm. When she did not return, family members started searching for her and found the body. "Spot verification revealed that the woman struggled before being killed. Pieces of her bangles were found at the spot," said SDPO ( Bonei) R B Panigrahi.
