D Ering Wildlife Sanctuary can be tourism hotspot if promoted well'

ITANAGAR: Principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) Omkar Singh has said the D Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, if promoted properly, could become one of the leading tourism spots in the coming days.

Addressing an awareness programme on forest & environment at Namsing village in Mebo subdivision of East Siang district on Monday, the PCCF said, "Your areas, referring to DEWS and its riverine beauty, are no less than a Switzerland and Poland. The riverine beauty along the mighty Siang overlooking the sanctuary is breathtaking and has the potential to become a favourite tourist destination."

While interacting with people coming from various areas of DEWS's fringe villages, the PCCF called upon one and all not to kill elephants as this animal is protected under law and stressed the need for its urgent conservation, officials said.

The PCCF lauded the efforts of D Ering Wildlife Foundation Eco-Development Society (Dewfeds), which organized the programme in association with DFO, Pasighat Division. Dewfeds, which has been making all-out efforts towards conservation of forest and wildlife in the region with special attention to D Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, drew the attention of PCCF on two cases of elephant killings, reported from this village within three months.

In connection with the killings of two female elephants in the area, Tabang Jamoh, DFO, Pasighat, made formal arrest of two suspects recently.
