Environmentalist objects state govt's decision of reducing penalty for axing a tree
JAIPUR: An environmentalist has raised objection to state government's decision of reducing the penalty for cutting a tree from Rs 25,000 to Rs 500.
The activist termed the decision a deliberate move to cause benefit to some MLA's whose businesses involve mining and real estate.
A group led by Vishnu Lamba, head of Shri Kalptaru Sansthan served a memorandum to the chief minister Vasundhara Raje seeking to bring old rule in place of new notification.
Raje said, "The decision will encourage those involved in the business of mining and wood. Reducing the penalty from Rs 25,000 to Rs 500 means that state has indirectly permitted the axing of trees."
Notably, the state forest cover has declined from 13.5% to 9.05% in last five years.
