Rhino poachers strike again in Kaziranga park
JORHAT:
Pochers on Saturday shot dead an adult female rhino in Kaziranga
National park and escaped with its horn and ears before the forest staff
could respond.
The rhino had left behind a calf which escaped the poachers' attack by entering a dense part of the forest. The park staff has located the calf and is monitoring its movements.
Till date, this is the third rhino killed by poachers in the park this year. On January 18, poachers killed a male rhino and chopped off its horn in the Panpur reserve forest under the sixth addition area of Kaziranga. In the same area, another rhino was killed on January 9.
The female rhino's carcass was spotted by forest staff patrolling near Sundori anti-poaching camp in the Burapahar forest range on Saturday. Park officials said they heard gunshots around 2.30 am and launched an operation. But when they reached the spot, the poachers had fled.
"Our staff found the carcass and some empty cartridges of AK 47 rifle at the spot," said park director M K Yadav.
