AHMEDABAD: The Greater Flamingo may be the state bird of Gujarat but in areas near Nalsarovar, the Greater or Lesser Flamingo is sold for just Rs 1,000. If there is a wedding in the area, the birds are killed to be served to guests as a delicacy.

Investigation into the recent incidents of poaching at Nalsarovar has revealed that the flamingos killed by the poachers were meant for mass feasts in villages around the bird sanctuary. With the marriage season at its peak, the local villagers are serving dishes made from flamingo meat. Officials said that from an adult flamingo, one gets about 15 kg of meat which sells in the open market at around Rs 70 per kg.

Officials further said that not only at weddings, flamingos are served even at community feasts organized by the local people. After the panchayat elections in 2012, incidents of poaching in areas such as Surendranagar, Ahmedabad, and even in parts of Kutch, had gone up because of such feasts, said officials.
