Leopard attack near Ooty sparks fear
Udhagamandalam:
Fear gripped Naduhatty hamlet in Edakadu village in Kundha taluk near
Ooty, as a leopard reportedly attacked one of the villagers in a tea
estate located in the vicinity on Tuesday evening.
Manigandan (42) from Naduhatty hamlet was attacked by a leopard in a tea garden in his village. He escaped with an injury on his left shoulder. Forest officials were notified and they went to the spot. "Our forest guards and watchers have been on vigil in the area till late in the evening. The leopard with its cubs has moved away from the tea estate. It had been spotted a month ago following which residents were warned not to venture close to the reserve forests," said C Badrasamy, District Forest Officer (south division).
"The leopard may have attacked the victim to protect its cubs," Badrasamy added. The tea bushes are a convenient hideout for tigers and leopards, he said.
According to villagers, this is the second time the leopard has been spotted within a month.
