Police busy saving toll nakas : High court

MUMBAI: Bombay High Court has observed that the police is busy protecting toll nakas when told that complaints of local resident about violations on wetlands are not looked into by the police as it is short-staffed.
A bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice Girish Kulkarni's observation on February 15, 2014 during the hearing of a public interest litigation for saving the wetlands in Maharashtra. Petitioner NGO Vanshakti's advocate Gayatri Singh informed that the police has said it cannot comply with the HC's January 31, 2014 direction to the director general of police to instruct police stations to take prompt action against persons responsible for damaging wetlands.
The court's direction came after the Stage government told HC last month that it has issued directions to all civic bodies to enforce a ban on reclamation or construction on wetlands. The police were asked to looked into additional list of violations were wetlands are being destroyed in areas such as Malwani, Dahisar, Vasai , Esselworld, Oshiwara, Ghansoli, Kanakia Nagar in Mira Road, Kasheli in Thane and Palm Beach Road, Navi Mumbai.
Singh said after the January 31, 2013 order, local residents of areas where violations were being carried out informed the senior inspectors of the concerned police stations to take action against the persons carrying put illegal activities. Police have informed them that no action can be taken by them due to shortage of staff to verify the allegations and because it is a non-cognizable offence,'' said Singh.
This is when Justice Kanade remarked,All police officers are busy saving the toll nakas.'' Singh submitted that in the absence of the State Wetlands Authority, there is no monitoring body to ensure that the wetlands are protected. Until the authority is set up, the senior police inspector must look into complaints,'' said Singh. The matter is adjourned after a week.
