Govt plans 6 lakh toilets in villages by March

PUNE: The state government hopes that hiking subsidy amount offered to each household will help it meet its target of constructing six lakh toilets in Maharashtra by March 2015. If the state succeeds in achieving its target, it will better its last year's performance of building 5 lakh lavatories, which forms about 10% of household toilets built across the country's hinterland last year.

Rural development minister Jayant Patil said on Monday that the government move is aimed at ensuring better sanitation and hygiene in every house.

Last year, 5.5 lakh people in villages used the state government's aid to build toilets. "We expect more people to benefit this year because the government has hiked the subsidy amount," Patil said while flagging off 'Sanitation and Gram Sabha Dindi' which will join the palkhi procession leaving the city on Monday. The dindi plans to reach out to over 5 lakh people with a message of cleanliness and compulsory use of toilets at homes.

"The state government has planned extensive efforts to increase construction and use of toilets in rural areas. Having a lavatory at home is now must to avail of benefits of several government-run schemes. All these efforts are aimed at achieving 100% sanitation," Patil said.

The rural development minister said that districts like Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg were way ahead of others in construction of toilets. "The situation is particularly bad in Marathwada and Vidarbha regions. The local authorities there have been asked to put in necessary efforts to engage people in achieving the goal of complete sanitation," said Patil.

As per the latest statistics available with the state government, over 64.93 lakh homes in rural parts do not have toilets. An official in the rural development department said that the state's performance in construction of toilets remained fairly good last year. Over 40 lakh toilets were built in rural parts of the country last year of which 5.5 lakh were built in Maharashtra. About 7 lakh new facilities will be built in the state by March 2015, said an official attached to the rural development department.

Meanwhile, Patil also unveiled medical kits that will be distributed among warkaris during the palkhi procession. Every kit contains tablets on common ailments like fever, cough and also first aid and bandage.

During the wari, devotees suffer injuries, body pain and even heart attacks. The medical aid kits will help mitigate their pain, said Patil.
